8th Graders Ask About The Effects Of Bailout
Bill
October 6, 2008 | Keloland
President Bush is asking for patience saying the
economy's going to be just fine in the long run.
So what's next? Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth
Sandlin is getting that question a lot lately.
Surprisingly,
even 8th graders at Whittier Middle School have
some serious questions about the bailout and its
effect on their families.
Representative
Stephanie Herseth Sandlin spent part of her afternoon
explaining the importance of knowing what's going
on in the economy. And, these 8th graders were
right there with her on the issue.
"They
clearly are paying attention to what they're seeing
on the news and reading in the newspaper, and
the conversation that I'm sure their folks are
having at the kitchen table,” Herseth Sandlin
said.
One-by-one
students asked about the economy from how gas
prices affect the school budget, to how the bailout
bill will directly affect them. Herseth Sandlin
explained what's happening today may affect them
when they apply for student loans or try to establish
credit in the future.
“But
it also affects them in the long term because
it's this generation , who's gonna be paying off
this debt, and I think it's important that they
star recognizing that decisions made now, have
an affect now and later,” Herseth Sandlin
said.
As
for the question their parents are likely asking:
What's next? The congresswoman says there's no
easy answer.
"The
president is now saying it's gonna take some time
to get this plan up and running, and to start
buying these troubled assets, I do hope that we
take time to have additional hearings to look
at what other, approaches we could have used what
more needs to be addressed in the future,”
Herseth Sandlin said.
Herseth
Sandlin also told students she hopes the bailout
will help their families borrow money. But, she's
still very concerned about the long-term affect,
especially when these kids are ready for college.
